Understanding Fragrance Families

By The Velour Noir Edit·October 2, 2024

From fresh citruses to ancient orientals — a clear guide to the major fragrance families and what they mean for you.

# Understanding Fragrance Families The fragrance world organises its enormous diversity into families — groups of scents that share a fundamental character. Understanding these families is the first step to navigating perfumery with confidence. ## The Major Families ### Fresh / Citrus Light, energising and immediately appealing. These fragrances open brilliantly but often fade quickly. ### Floral The largest family in perfumery. From single-note soliflores to complex bouquets, florals range from simple to extraordinarily sophisticated. ### Oriental / Amber Rich, warm and sensual. These are the fragrances of the east — amber, resins, spices and vanilla create depth and longevity. ### Woody Grounded and tactile. Sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver and patchouli anchor compositions with earthiness and warmth. ### Chypre A sophisticated accord of bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss. Chypres are among the most complex and intellectually satisfying of all fragrance families. ### Fougère Built on lavender, oakmoss and coumarin — traditionally masculine, but increasingly gender-free in modern interpretations.
